Alex Puz American, b. 1989
Alex Puz is a painter whose systemic approach to color and line results in dense, ornate chromatic compositions. In his practice, Puz draws on optics, color study, and linear abstraction to explore the gap between emotional and cognitive processes. Building his paintings layer by layer, he crafts slanted networks of intersecting stripes using tape and masking fluid. Once complete, these color-modulated lines coalesce to form fluid moiré patterns which oscillate between the geometric and the organic. This meticulous yet unpredictable process yields magnetic illusions capable of igniting viewers’ cognitive and perceptual centers. By distorting perceptual boundaries, his paintings give rise to a conscious awareness of the combined psychological and physical effects of visual stimulation. Whether intimate in scale or more expansive, Puz’s undulating lines perform a compelling dual gesture: drawing the viewer inward while simultaneously projecting energetically beyond the edges of the canvas. In this way, he cultivates a sense of perpetual evolution, offering generative reflections on the impacts of color on emotional experience.
Alex Puz (b. 1989, Long Beach, CA) received his BFA at Hunter College. In 2022, he completed his MFA in Painting/Printmaking at the Yale School of Art. Puz has exhibited throughout the United States and internationally, most recently serving as the subject of a solo exhibition, Trichromacy, at PFA-Kensington. He has additionally been showcased at the Ford Foundation Gallery in NY, NY, Gallery Simon in Seoul, KR, Jeffrey Deitch in NY, NY, and The Campus in Hudson, NY, presented by James Cohan.
His pieces are in the permanent collections of numerous private and public institutions, including JP Morgan Chase Art Collection; Yale Health, New Haven, CT; Jiménez-Colón Collection; and the NXTHVN Collection, New Haven, CT. His work has been covered in publications including Vogue, ArtMaze Magazine, liveart.io, and the Yale Daily News. In addition, Puz was a NXTHVN Cohort 05 Fellow (2024) and was nominated for the Rema Hort Mann Foundation Emerging Artist Grant (2017). He currently lives and works in Baltimore, MD.
