Christopher Miles American, b. 1968

Biography

Christopher Miles crafts sculptural ceramic works driven by curiosity, craftsmanship, and a profound commitment to discursive inquiry. His practice is rooted in a deep engagement with making, tinkering, and problem-solving, paired with a passion for service to the material world. His ceramic works stand as a testament to this hands-on, material-driven ethos, showcasing a remarkable synthesis of traditional ceramics and innovative assemblage techniques. Each work is a deliberate and thoughtful amalgamation of form, texture, and meaning—an intricate dance between the organic and the mechanical, the crafted and the constructed. Coated in lustrous glazes of varied and sometimes unexpected compositions, his works present a striking interplay of contrasts. The interior surfaces, with their dripping protrusions and leaky gestures, evoke a sense of fluidity and spontaneity, while the exterior layers, built up meticulously over fifty layers, are dry, firm, and angular—evoking a sense of order and structure. Through this dynamic interplay of material, form, and process, Miles' sculptures become a vehicle for deeper inquiry into the transformative power of art.
